Lydia: Faith in the Marketplace
The businesswoman whose heart the Lord opened. Faith, work, household, and generosity for women who work, sell, and serve.
Acts 16 · Colossians 3:23 · Philippians 1
Bible studies for working women
Short, doctrinally sound Bible studies written for the work week. About twelve minutes a day, printable or on your tablet, in the ESV.
Why Called & Capable
Every study we write is shaped by these. Read our story.
Your work matters
The Reformers called it vocation. Ordinary work done in faith is service to God and love for your neighbor, whether you run a business, teach a classroom, or work a hospital shift.
Scripture first
Twelve minutes is enough to read a passage carefully, think about it, and carry it into your day. We keep studies brief so you finish them, and grounded so they matter.
Grace, not hustle
Your standing with God was never a performance review. Every study points you back to the finished work of Christ and the God who keeps His promises.

She was a businesswoman far from home, the head of her household, and the first person in Europe the Bible records coming to faith in Christ. Spend a work week with Lydia and learn how God meets working women right where they are.
How each day works
Read the passage slowly in the ESV.
A short devotional connecting the text to your work and life.
Two or three questions with room to write.
One verse and one small action for your workday.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”Colossians 3:23 (ESV)
For the woman in the middle of it
You love the Lord. You also have a job, a household, and a calendar that does not let up. You have tried Bible studies that assumed an hour of free time and a quiet morning every day. Then you fell behind, felt guilty, and set them down.
Called & Capable exists for you. Studies that fit the time you actually have, teach you the Bible faithfully, and send you back into your work week reminded that you belong to Christ.
Coming January 2027
A new 4-week study in your inbox on the first of every month, with a Monday email to start each week and Going Deeper pages for when you want more.
The studies
Each study shows exactly how long it takes, so you can choose one that fits the season you are in. All studies use the ESV and are delivered as a printable PDF.

Monday through Friday, a 12-minute study day. Saturday, a short catch-up or review day for anything you missed. Sunday, no assigned reading, just a simple page for sermon notes and one question, so the study points you to worship with your church rather than competing with it.
We want these studies to be within reach for every woman. If you can’t afford a study right now, email us at hello@calledandcapableco.com and we’ll send it to you free. No questions asked.
Studies / Lydia
Lydia gets only a few verses in Scripture, but they are full. She sold luxury purple goods hundreds of miles from her hometown. She was a worshiper of God, and the Lord opened her heart to the gospel. Her household was baptized with her, and her home became a gathering place for the first church in Europe.
This study walks through her story one workday at a time, with a short passage, a devotional rooted in Reformed teaching, questions with room to write, and one verse to carry into your day.

“The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.”Acts 16:14 (ESV)
A look at Day 2
Lydia was at the river, sitting under the preaching of God’s Word. But Luke is careful to tell us who did the real work. She did not open her own heart. The Lord did. Saving faith is not something we produce. It is a gift God gives, by His Spirit, through His Word.
This is good news on a busy week. Your standing with God rests on Christ’s finished work, not your performance.

It started with a working mom, a full calendar, and a stack of Bible studies she never finished.
Called & Capable was started by a working mother of two who runs her own businesses. She loves the Lord and loves her work. For years she felt like she had to choose between them.
The Bible studies she picked up assumed an hour of quiet every morning. Real life looked different: an early meeting, a sick kid, a client emergency, a full inbox before 8 AM. She would fall behind by Wednesday, feel guilty by Friday, and put the study on the shelf.
What she found underneath the guilt was a quieter lie: that her job was the thing keeping her from God, and that she would be more spiritual if she simply worked less.
The Bible tells a different story. God put Adam in the garden “to work it and keep it” before sin ever entered the world. Work is part of how we bear God’s image. The Reformers recovered this truth and called it vocation: whether you are a pastor or a bookkeeper, a nurse or a shop owner, ordinary work done in faith is a way of serving God and loving your neighbor.
Scripture is also full of working women. The woman of Proverbs 31 considers a field and buys it. Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz. Lydia sells purple goods in Philippi. Priscilla works alongside her husband as a tentmaker. None of them were asked to leave their work behind to follow the Lord. God met them in it.
So we started writing the studies we wished we had. Short enough to finish on a real workday. Faithful to the text and to historic Reformed teaching. Honest about the pressures working women carry. And always pointing back to the gospel: you are not saved by how much you get done, but by what Christ has already done for you.
We call it Called & Capable because both words matter. You are called to the work in front of you, at home and in the marketplace. And you are capable, not because you are strong enough on your own, but because the God who began a good work in you will bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6).
We write for women: corporate professionals and small business owners, teachers and nurses, women working full time or part time, women working outside the home and women working for the household. If you are a Christian woman with a full life and a desire to know God’s Word better, these studies are for you.
One more thing we believe deeply: no study can replace your local church. We hope these studies send you back to the Lord’s Day, to faithful preaching, and to the care of your pastor and elders, better prepared and more hungry for God’s Word.
What we believe
Our studies are written from a confessionally Reformed perspective. We hold to the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as faithful summaries of what Scripture teaches.
The Bible, Old and New Testaments, is the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God. It is the only rule of faith and life, and it is sufficient for everything we need for godliness.
There is one God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is sovereign over all things, including our salvation, our work, and every ordinary day.
We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Salvation is God’s work from beginning to end. He opens hearts, as He opened Lydia’s, and He keeps those He saves.
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He lived the perfect life we could not live, died in our place for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, and will return in glory.
God grows His people through the ordinary means of grace: the preaching of the Word, the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, and prayer, within the fellowship and oversight of the local church.
All honest work can be done to the glory of God. Ordinary labor in the home and in the marketplace is a calling, a place to serve God and love our neighbors.
God created men and women equally in His image, with equal dignity and worth. He has also given them distinct and complementary callings in the home and in the church, where the offices of pastor and elder are given to qualified men.
All studies quote the English Standard Version (ESV), a faithful, word-for-word translation widely used in Reformed churches.
Called & Capable studies are personal devotional resources written by and for women. They are not a substitute for the preaching of the Word, the sacraments, or the shepherding of your local church. If a study raises a question, take it to your pastor or elders. We would love for these studies to make you a more engaged member of your congregation.

Our core studies run four weeks: twenty weekday study days, a Saturday catch-up day each week, and a Sunday page for sermon notes. We also offer a few shorter studies, like Lydia, and a seasonal Advent study.
Most days take about twelve minutes: three to read, five to reflect, three to answer questions, and one to choose a verse and an action for your day. Take longer if you have it.
Pick up where you left off. The studies are numbered by day, not by date, so there is no falling behind.
